The branch of psychology concerned with the affects and effects of drugs on the mind and behavior. Psychopharmacology comes from the Greek word “psykhe”, meaning breath, life, or soul and “pharmakon” meaning drug. is the scientific study of the actions of drugs and their effects on mood, sensation, thinking, and behavior. It is distinguished from neuropsychopharmacology, which emphasizes drug-induced changes in the functioning of cells in the nervous system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopharmacology).[1]
Counselors, Therapist, Psychologist, and Psychiatrist are familiar with prescription drugs. The law requires main and side effects posted and printed for all to read. Street drugs given by the illegal “street pharmacist” are not labeled and a general understanding of the effects on the mind and behavior is recommended. This reduces:
■Health risks,
■Drug interaction complications,
■Misdiagnosis, and
■Increases the administration of the correct prescriptions.

When your child takes medications tell the Doctor…:
1.…the Medication and dose history (for example: milligrams of the dose and how often it is taken).
2.…the Medications from other Doctors.
3.…the over the counter Medications.
4.…the home remedies and wholistic medications taken (for example: Homopathetic and Flower Remedies, some Doctors prescribe them).
5.…psychotropic Medications (for example: Medications prescribed by a Psychiatrist).
6.…Medical conditions.
7.…and past experiences with Medications.

The new lower dose of adult medications give hope to:
■ Less increase in tolerance with longer use time,
■Reduced side effects, and
■Less addictive effects.
An example of this new lower dose for adult medications include the 81 milligram Asprin. In the past the lowest dose was 200 milligrams.
As caregivers, whether Parent, Counselor, Therapist, Psychologist, or Psychiatrist, education on a subject increases success and decreases mistakes.
For all of our “Good Health”, remember:
1.Know the side and main effects of the medications.
2.Tell the Doctor all you medications, even over-the-counter, homopathetic, and flower remedies.
3.Report how the medications are effecting you for the best care.
